Raising awareness about sustainability in the furniture industry | Circular economy research |

Hi! I’m Daria Pernak. and what brings me here today is the topic of sustainbility for past few months I’ve been working on a design research The question I’ve been trying to answer is Let’s talk about sustainability and circular economy in Amsterdam The city has many projects towards implementing the circular economy and with its international set-up has a great environment to apply new ideas Sustainability is becoming some kind of a new trend. If it stays like this, it can help in raising the awareness. The results of many observations show that more than 75% of people when approached, wants to discuss the sustainability and show interest in that People spend the most money on clothes, accesories and furniture. 39% of the participants of the survey claim that they do not know how their products are produced because companies simply do not provide the information but the same result was withdrawn from expert interviews According to the experts the key to reach the sustainability are well designed timeless products Look and the price are two most important factors when buying the furniture but the production ways are landing on the third place. More than 55% of people answers that quality means that that product will be long-lasting 25% of the participants say that they think that quality is how product was produced and that it means that it was produced in a sustainable way. Only 1 in 4 people think that quality is simply how product looks. Within the furniture industry for consumers, end-users, clients, it is important to feel the product to able to test it And regarding the furniture, what would you say are like the main factors when you consider buying it Let’s say you want, you need a new couch What would be the most important? Mostly important would be design first place and then where do furniture come from is it eco-friendly? As a company providing the information and spreading the message about sustainability brings a lot of benefits for some consumers, it might be the factor to actually buy your product Research results show that people do not keep track of the created waste Therefore there is a need for a product or service that could bring company and the consumers closer, to maintain a sustainable relationship, so the end-users could understand more what’s happening behind their product. The results indicate that it’s the responsibility of companies to provide you information about what’s happening behind the product, but after all it’s your decision what you’re going to do What are you going to do about it?
