Making Tax Digital – Meet Richard Balson

Our history is 504 years old,
in 1515 when Robert John Balson started the business
in the reign of Henry the Eighth 504 years right up to the present day. We’ve survived fires, plagues, wars,
floods, recessions, health scares and we’re still here. And in that time keeping it small, offering a personal, professional service but again not being afraid to diversify and adapt to change and try new ideas. Over the years there’s been a great
great change in records. I mean obviously when we started
five hundred years ago there was virtually nothing. In 1973 when they brought
VAT in my father kept the records manually. Pencil, carbon paper, books. I can remember him having lots of bits
of paper everywhere and I’ve taken that on. But now that we’re moving into the 1st of April
and it’s all going to be digitally kept. It’s gonna be far easier, quicker. Just press a button
and see where we are. It’s going to give me more time to spend on doing other things. The VAT return is very easy. You have an app on your phone,
you photograph your invoice and that sends it through on the system. And so it’s all there digitally stored. Even I can do it, it’s easy. Well if I could give any advice to other people it would be go down a similar route
to ourselves. Seek the advice of your accountant. There’s plenty of help online, plenty of literature that’s come through the post
that’s helpful and it’s been quite an easy process really.
