Law and the “Sharing Economy”

Hi, I’m Derek McKee, I’m a law professor
at the University of Sherbrooke and I’m a co-editor of the volume Law and the
“Sharing Economy” – Regulating Online Market Platforms. And I’m Teresa Scassa, Canada
Research Chair in Information Law and Policy at the University of Ottawa, I’m a
co-editor of this book along with Finn Makela of the University of
Sherbrooke. This book is a collection of articles by legal scholars dealing with
legal issues arising out of online platforms like Airbnb and Uber. These are
platforms that allow buyers and sellers of goods and services to contact one
another and arrange exchanges through the internet. These
platforms burst onto the scene about five or six years ago and there was a
lot of interest in their economic potential. But it was clear to us when we
looked at these issues that there were a lot of serious legal issues that needed
to be dealt with and we thought it was important to get legal scholars together
to talk up and write about these issues. What we’ve put together is I think a
really interesting and engaging collection of papers that deal with a
broad range of issues including labor law, competition law, municipal law,
dispute resolution, internet regulation, and data issues to name just a few. And
while there are chapters or articles written from a legal
perspective we hope they’ll be of interest to a broad audience.
