Growing the Economy . . . FAST!

Growing the Economy . . . FAST!

Illinois needs an economic boost. Unemployment is the highest in decades, and the economy of today and tomorrow is changing. What’s the problem? The Illinois economy has been stagnant, like our
surrounding states. So what is the goal? While Illinois is a top ten states for university research, we should better utilize that strength to
launch innovative start-up companies that could boost economic growth. What we find now is that in this new
globalized economy, we are moving from an agricultural and industrial
based economy to a knowledge based economy where innovation and creativity are really the focus of economic growth and productivity. And that’s what is important for the state of Illinois, our economy and
the welfare, the quality of life in our communities is to be able to adapt. to grow and prosper in that new economy So what’s the solution? What recommendations from the Illinois Public
Agenda for College and Career Success can help Illinois meet our goal to move Illinois into
the five states with the fastest growing economies?
To do that Illinois must improve its performance in making venture capital available to
finance business startups, in creating and growing technology start-ups,
and translating its university research standing into economic and entrepeneurial success. And to
do this without jeopardizing public service, protection, and safety. We have a strong competitive advantage in the state of Illinois having some of the world’s strongest universities, including a strong community college system, that allows us at many different levels both to push back the frontiers of knowledge, develop new technology and incubators and
research parks, but also provide those educational skills to undergraduate students and graduate students that go out into the economy and live productive lives and are able
to work with the sophisticated new biotechnology equipment, are able to operate the sophisticated telecommunications
systems, and so forth that make our society both livable and welcoming, but also make our
economy run. That’s, I think, is a very important asset for the people of Illinois to understand that that’s where their investment in higher education in this state begins to pay
off over the long term. For more on the Illinois Public Agenda for
