Filing a Personal Income Tax Extension without an Online Services Account

Filing a Personal Income Tax Extension without an Online Services Account

Welcome to the New York State Tax Department’s
Online Services. In this demonstration, we’ll show you how
to file for an extension of time to file a return without logging in to your Online Services
account. This method can only be used if you won’t
need to make a payment when filing for the extension, or if you intend to pay by mail. To make an electronic payment when filing
for the extension, you’ll need an Online Services account. If you haven’t yet created an Online Services
account, visit our website to learn how. To begin, go to our website at www.tax.ny.gov. At the top of the page, select Individuals. On the Individuals landing page, move to the
section headed “Online Services” and select Request an Extension. You can also use the search function to access
this page. Just enter “personal income tax extension”
in the search field at the top of the page, then select Personal Income Tax Extension
from the top recommended search results. On the next page, scroll down to the section
headed “How to request your extension” and select the online service link. Complete the security check by entering the
number highlighted in gold into the field below it. When finished, select Continue. On the Electronic Payment Information page,
tell us whether you need to make a payment with your extension by selecting the appropriate
radio button. For more information on any field, select
the green question mark icon beside it. When you’re ready to proceed, select Continue. On the Filing Information page, we’ll ask
for some information about the extension you are requesting. From the Filer type drop-down menu, select
the type of return you will be filing, then select your filing status. If there’s a special condition that applies
to your return, select it from the Special condition drop-down menu. Most filers won’t need to select a special
condition. When finished, select Continue. On the next screen, enter your name and social
security number in the section headed “Your information.” Next, provide your mailing address. When finished, select Continue. This will bring you to the Taxes You Owe page. In the section headed “Filing details”,
select the combination of taxes you are subject to from the drop-down menu. Next, enter the amount of sales and use tax
you owe for the year. The field cannot be left blank, so enter “0”
if you do not owe any sales or use tax. In the field labeled “Total payment amount”,
enter the total amount you would expect to pay if you filed your return today. The total payment amount includes the total
of any New York State and local taxes plus sales and use tax, minus any prepayments. Prepayments include estimated tax payments,
credit carry forwards, credits, and withholding tax payments. When finished, select Continue. Review your extension details. To make changes to any section, select Edit. If no changes are needed, review
the eSignature section, and select Submit. A confirmation page will display your payment
details, including a confirmation number. To print this page for your records, select
Print. To pay by mail with a voucher, select Print
payment voucher. This completes our demonstration. Thank you for your interest in New York State
Online Services.
